What is a true knot?

A true knot is a type of knot that occurs in umbilical cords during pregnancy. It forms when the umbilical cord becomes twisted or tangled, creating a knot that can sometimes impact the flow of blood and nutrients to the fetus. True knots are relatively rare, occurring in only about 1-2% of pregnancies. In most cases, they do not cause any complications and are discovered during routine ultrasounds or at the time of delivery. However, in some instances, a true knot can lead to decreased fetal movement, growth restriction, or other complications that may require closer monitoring or medical intervention.
